Wayne Gretzky and Larry Culp are not known to have any documented personal or business relationship. Their names appear together mainly because of secondary coverage of a 2022 business conference, where Culp’s participation is confirmed but the way Gretzky’s name entered the story is far less firmly established. In short, this looks like a shared media reference, not a partnership.
Why Are Wayne Gretzky and Larry Culp Mentioned Together?
The pairing traces back to coverage of the May 2022 Milken Institute Global Conference. Larry Culp, then chairman and CEO of General Electric, is listed as a participant on the Milken Institute’s official speaker page, which makes his involvement the one solid, independently confirmed fact in the story.
The Gretzky element is murkier. Several secondary articles report that a hockey analogy, tied to Gretzky’s famous philosophy of skating to where the puck is going, was used by Xavier Gutierrez, a former Arizona Coyotes executive, in conference-related coverage. Those accounts reference a Sports Business Journal piece, but we were unable to locate the original article or verify its full text. For that reason, this explanation should be read as a reported account, not a fully established fact.
It is worth being precise about what this does and does not show. A sports legend’s name surfacing in coverage of an event is not the same as that person attending the event, and it is certainly not evidence that he knows or has worked with another speaker.

What Was the 2022 Milken Institute Global Conference?
The Milken Institute Global Conference is an annual gathering that brings together executives, investors, policymakers, and philanthropists to discuss business, finance, technology, health, and public policy. The 2022 edition took place in May and drew prominent leaders from across industries.
Culp took part as a business leader at a time when GE was working through its multi-year transformation. Nothing in the sources reviewed indicates that Gretzky was among the attendees, and this article does not suggest otherwise.
Who Is Wayne Gretzky?
Wayne Gretzky, born in Brantford, Ontario, is widely regarded as the greatest hockey player of all time. Nicknamed “The Great One,” he began his NHL career in 1979 and played for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers before retiring in 1999.
His Hockey Career and Lasting Legacy
Gretzky won four Stanley Cups with the Oilers in the 1980s and holds the NHL’s career records for goals, assists, and points. His 894 career goals, 1,963 assists, and 2,857 points remain far ahead of the field, and his number 99 was retired league-wide in 1999. For exact figures and the full list of records, readers should consult the NHL’s official records, which are the authoritative source.
His hockey philosophy, summarized in the idea of going where the puck is headed rather than where it has been, is the reason his name is so often borrowed by business speakers.
Who Is Larry Culp?
H. Lawrence Culp Jr. is an American executive best known for his leadership of Danaher and General Electric. He joined Danaher in 1990 and served as its CEO from 2001 to 2014, a period widely associated with the company’s growth and its emphasis on continuous improvement.
His Leadership at GE and GE Aerospace
In October 2018, GE named Culp its chairman and CEO, making him the first outsider to lead the company in its history. He guided GE through a major restructuring that ultimately separated the conglomerate into focused businesses. Following those spin-offs, Culp serves as chairman and CEO of GE Aerospace. His official GE Aerospace biography is the best source for his current title and career details.
Did Wayne Gretzky and Larry Culp Work Together?
No direct professional collaboration or business partnership between the two has been established by the public sources reviewed. Nor is there any evidence that they are related.
This is a careful way of putting it. The absence of documentation is not proof that the two have never crossed paths; it simply means no reliable source supports a claim of a working relationship. Articles that flatly declare they have never met are going further than the evidence allows.
What Does the Gretzky Hockey Analogy Mean in Business?
The analogy at the center of this story is a common one in leadership talks: successful organizations anticipate where markets, technologies, and customers are going instead of reacting only to current conditions. In conference settings, it is shorthand for strategic foresight.
Because the exact wording and the speaker in this case have not been verified against an original source, we do not attribute any specific quotation to Gretzky here, and the reported use by Xavier Gutierrez should be treated with the same caution described above.
